What is meditation?

What is meditation?

Have you ever meditated?  Do you know what it is?

Sounds like something very “new-age”, doesn’t it? It actually been around for thousands of years. It’s in almost all religions in some way or another.

Meditation is a precise technique for resting the mind. It is a way to attain a state of consciousness that is different from what we experience in day to day life. Its a way to understand all of the levels of ourselves. It is a wonderful tool to reduce stress. You need no equipment, and you don’t need anyone else. What you do need is a little time, some space, and to be somewhere where no one else can bother you.

Have you ever felt that your mind just never shuts off. You are lying in bed trying to go to sleep and all you can hear is your mind sprinting around thinking about everything you have to do, everything you should have done and all of the reasons that you didn’t. The thing is, this generates stress, as well as a sense of helplessness of never being able to catch up or make things happen. Meditation helps you come back to the moment, to today, to now.  It helps keep the mind clear, relaxed and focused within. Meditating isn’t a way to fall asleep its a way to be more mindful of yourself and your surroundings.

While meditating you are awake and totally alert, but your mind shouldn’t be focused on the outside world, it should be focusing inwards to actually quiet the mind. When the mind is finally silent and it no longer distracts you, meditation deepens.
